The Tenth Circle
When Daniel Stone was a child, he was the only white boy in a native Eskimo village where his mother taught, and he was teased mercilessly because he was different. He fought back, the baddest of the bad kids: stealing, drinking, robbing and cheating his way out of the Alaskan bush – where he honed his artistic talent, fell in love with a girl and got her pregnant. To become part of a family, he reinvented himself – jettisoning all that anger to become a docile, devoted husband and father. And then fifteen years later we meet Daniel Stone again .... surprisingly they are doing well they both are employed and his daughter is the light of his life until something horrific happens to her ( I cannot imagine what my dad would do if this happened to me) the light of his life is date raped.

Style Mapping
In Cormac McCarthy's excerpt from "Blood Meridian" he writes in a picturesque, metaphoric connotative language. While in Neil Gaiman's excerpt from "Stardust" has a low but blunt and familiar language. "Stardust" could also be described as denotative because of it's straight-forwardness and literal characterization. Despite they're differences they both can create a picture in your mind but the way McCarthy does it is contrasting from how Gaiman does it. McCarthy creates pictures in the mind by similes, metaphors and poetic devices; while Gaiman is very common and edgeless when describing things. Ron McLarthy's novel "the Memory of Running" is common and lacking picturesque, very bland and basic. It is descriptive but in a dull way of listing. None of these excerpts/novels portray any elevated or fancy language but more of an elementary and figurative way of writing.

New book I'm starting this week!
Jays Journal! I have already read Go Ask Alice and this is a companion diary to it. They both have the same problems, drug addiction. I'm exciting to start reading! I will get back to this once I get started .....

Pages this week: 405
Free verse style is why I read so many pages
This book was pretty interesting and VERY easy for me to read because the pages were so short which made me want to keep turning and turning them. I normally struggle with reading the pages each week but this made it a little easier for me to keep up. This book was all about drugs and rehab and these kids going through it all and all the regrets and hard times they had been through. I love books like this about real life, things that could actually happen and things that do happen everyday in the world.
Sentences of the quarter
1. “Adolescence is such a fun time in your life, because you think you know it all, and you haven’t gotten to the point where you realize that you know almost nothing.”
2. “We raised our glasses.”
3. “Then, just as suddenly as I had arrived at the gates of heaven, I left them.”

13 Reasons Why
I just presented my trailer for 13 Reasons Why yesterday by Jay Asher. It took quite a lot of work since I've never made a video clip before but I did it finally and it turned out not too bad. I was pretty proud of myself! What made it easier for me though was liking the book so much. Its one of the only books I've read that I actually enjoyed and could read over and over again and could relate to and remember and talk about with people. Tell people to read it and tell them how great of a book it is. I'm sure its a book most teenage girls would like but boys and adults I think would like it as well. I don't think it'd be a good book for younger kids to read just because of the main conflict is it's about suicide and the main character "Hannah Baker" talks about some strange things and can joke about her death in some ways too which is odd.

Sentences of the week
1. “Adolescence is such a fun time in your life, because you think you know it all, and you haven’t gotten to the point where you realize that you know almost nothing.”
2. "It's weird, I was such a survivor and so wanted to be a part of life while I was trying to snuff out the life that was inside of me"
3. “Then, just as suddenly as I had arrived at the gates of heaven, I left them.”
The first two sentences are from Scar Tissue and the third one is from 90 Minutes in Heaven. I thought these sentences this week were very powerful and really stuck in my head.

This week I continued reading Scar Tissue and also read some of 90 Minutes in Heaven. Scar Tissue is about the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers named Anthony Kiedis. He abuses drugs and just have the stereotype lifestyle of a rock star. He goes through so many ups and downs, almost OD's and just does some totally insane things. However 90 Minutes in Heaven is a completely different story about a man who is in a terrible car accident and when police and paramedics arrive to the scene they pronounce him dead upon impact. Don Piper was the man in the story and he layed there with a tarp over him while he began to see a bright white light. He began experiencing the entrance to heaven, with beautiful music, and everyone standing at a gate waving and waiting for him with the biggest smiles. He said he had never felt so happy, the way he felt was ineffable. The crazy part of this was Don Piper was not dead. A preacher came to his side to speak to him and pray to him .. the preacher doing this thought he was dead until he noticed him breathing. This story is truely an unbelievable story and gave me goosebumps and this strange feeling like a reassurance that heaven is there and God is waiting.

Just thought of something
How cool would it be to be a girl DJ. Maybe I should try it out. That'd be way too cool. Making beats, looking fresh, meeting fellas. Livin the good life. Wonder why more girls aren't DJs maybe because we have to rhythm or atleast thats what people may think.
Favorite Poems
"September Twelfth 2001" by X.J. Kennedy
and....
"I said it to you" by Paul Eluard
and....
"The Trail is Not a Trail" by Gary Snyder
All these poems stuck out to me compared to the others. However the one that stuck out most was obviously the 9/11 related one because that is someting I was familiar with and could really get into it and understand and feel the emotions and pain. That impacted us greatly and because of that I will always remember the effect it had. "I said it to you" stuck out to me because it seemed as if someone was really caring about someone looking up to them as a leader or hero and showing how much they mean. Saying "I said it to you for your thoughts for your words" If someone were to say that to me I would be so touched. Knowing someone wants to listen to your words and them thinking what you have to say is knowledgeable, important, etc is a compliment.

The Case Is Over
So the ending went like this. Jacob found Jess dead already and cleaned up all the traces and took her where she needed to go. The reason know one could find answers is because Jacob erased all of them. He was never lying he didn't kill her but he knew she was dead. Jess had slipped in the shower and hit her head causing her to die. Theo Jacobs older brother had seen her and freaked out. Jacob saw her and thought "this is like a dream come true" as strange as that sounds. Jess was his crush but forensics was his love. I'm going to go look on google to see if there are any cases similar to this one. If Jodi Picoult got this idea from an actual event. AND now i've got to find myself a new book :-)

When your son can't look you in the eye...does that mean he's guilty?
Jacob Hunt is a teen with Asperger's syndrome. He's hopeless at reading social cues or expressing himself well to others, though he is brilliant in many ways. But he has a special focus on one subject - forensic analysis. A police scanner in his room clues him in to crime scenes, and he's always showing up and telling the cops what to do. And he's usually right.
But when Jacob's small hometown is rocked by a terrible murder, law enforcement comes to him. Jacob's behaviors are hallmark Asperger's, but they look a lot like guilt to the local police. Suddenly the Hunt family, who only want to fit in, are directly in the spotlight. For Jacob's mother, Emma, it's a brutal reminder of the intolerance and misunderstanding that always threaten her family. For his brother, Theo, it's another indication why nothing is normal because of Jacob.
I can't believe it I finished the novel!!!!!!!!! It was awesome!!! And such an unexpected ending but very interesting and breathe taking. I would have never predicted it

- "A son who tries to be like everyone else but truly doesn't know how."
House Rules
- "It's a room with no windows and no doors, and walls that are thin enough for me to see and hear everything but too thick to break through."

The first sentence I posted shows a sense of reality. That in todays society people are judged by who they "hangout" with or who they are dating. If that person is weathly, popular, or good looking. That if the boy Jacob in the book had a girlfriend he'd be just like everyone else. People would not look at him as different. The last sentence I posted was very interesting to me, literally I understood the concept but thinking of myself being in his shoes was frightening. His mind had to of been going crazy.

MISSING
I can't believe it... Jess is missing! And Jacob has been questioned. This is Jacobs hobby shoved into reality. Its unreal though! I don't know what to think I'm so speechless I can't put my book down! Do you ever wonder why? Like why do people get blessed with something so unlucky or why do people get blessed with what it seems like everything in this entire world. Whoever you believe in, why do they make this world so crazy? I believe in what the yogi's say about the word om. That everything is moving, nothing is ever solid or still. Om is said to be the sound of the universe. Saying om takes us for a ride on this universal movement, through our breath, our awareness, and our physical energy, and we begin to sense a bigger connection that is both uplifting and soothing. The world is something many people think they're on top of and aware of but no one takes the time to simplify it and truly take a breathe and see the world for what it really is.
Even though this is what Jacob is always searching for; an opportunity to actually solve a case, I don't think he wants it to be about the girl hes so called "loves". However as the detective questions them he acts very sketchy. He is fidgety and cannot keep eye contact. The detective thinks its odd and so do I reading the novel; however, his mom says that is just how he is. That he didn't even get upset when his grandfather passed away. But why, why was Jacob at the crime scene? Was he simply waiting to be tutored or was there something more. His intelligence of this subject is over the top, that would just be the place for him to be. So what was all this? Coincidence or something much more.

Intrigued
This novel has began making me think about things I have never thought about, and made me try and figure out things I'd never think I'd want to figure out. But my new favorite thing about this story is Jacobs love towards Jess and hatred towards her boyfriend. He lists off reasons such as he makes her cry sometimes, she has bruises on her legs (and thinks they are from him), he calls Jacob retarded, and he ignores him whenever he sees him. Jacob's crush on Jess is unrealistic but he loves the thought of it. To him it'd make him feel "normal" and appear "normal". As I've been reading I've noticed parts where Jacob does not mind his syndrome and then other times were it seems as if all he wants to do is be "normal".

House Rules
Jacob a boy with Aspergers syndrome has many disadvantages but one unique skill. The skill of mastering criminal cases. His mind lets him plot out scenarios and play them out. His family has gotten very use to this odd hobby of his. Theo Jacob's brother is not fond of his peculiar focus on forensic analysis. He calls him a freak, and outcast all sorts. Trying to imagine having such a disorder is hard to comprehend, something most people do not think about. At the beginning of the book Jodi Picoult says "A son who tries to be like everyone else but truly doesn't know how". That sentence gave me a good understanding of how to understand Jacob.
